Spicoli’s Grill and the Reverb Rock Garden is planning a big change which they hope will make waves in the Cedar Valley. The project will be the result of merging their current live music format with the world of gaming.
Spicoli’s owners Cody Winther (with wife Nicole) and Rob Dunn have been looking for ways to increase foot traffic on non band nights and increase interest in the club before and after shows. For some time the two have been aware of the increasing popularity of gaming in bars involving old school arcade games, especially in bigger markets such as Des Moines, Kansas City, and Minneapolis. With the plethora of bars in the area, the goal is to become one of the most unique bars in the Cedar Valley. The new entity will be known as Spicoli’s Rockade.
Earlier this year Winther and Dunn reached out to Rick Uhlenhopp, a known gamer in the community who has had aspirations of opening an arcade bar in the Cedar Valley, about the possibility of merging the two ideas. Uhlenhopp, who specializes in old school arcade games, then brought partners Troy and Carah Evans, who specialize in new and vintage pinball games, into the mix. The result will be what the group hopes will be a bar unlike any other in the Cedar Valley.
Winther and Dunn will remain owners of the club. Winther will retain his role as talent buyer and band promoter, while Dunn will oversee the general management of the bar and food service. Uhlenhopp and the Evans’ will oversee the gaming operation. Half of the bar will be dedicated to the live music and rock atmosphere while the other half will be dedicated to the gaming aspect.
The new operation will offer the same music format as before, along with the same food options, however we will be adding the gaming aspect to the mix. Further, there will be new construction to complete the back beer garden as well which had to be dug up to fix leaking sewer lines.
The bar is set to undergo a brief remodeling period at the end of May and expect to be ready for a grand opening weekend June 3 rd and 4 th . The bar plans to complete the updates to the facility May 29-June 1, updating some of the cosmetics and setting up the gaming section of the bar. The goal is to be the most unique bar in the Cedar Valley catering to the music and gaming crowd…an adult playground of fun and good times.
